Chenin Blanc, also known as Pineau de la Loire in France, is a grape common in the Loire Valley where it is used in the Loire Sparkling Wines because of its high acidity.

In California, it is widely grown and often used in combination with other grapes for ordinary table wine. When carefully cultivated, as in the Curtis Vineyard, it can produce a stand-alone aromatic wine of interesting complexity.


Bruce McGuire sources his grapes for the Chenin Blanc from Curtis Vineyard- known for loam rich soil, warm afternoons, and cool evenings that produce distinctive Rhone varietals. Self-rooted vines grown at high elevation help create the unique characteristics of this wine.


Winemaker Comments: This wine is sourced from Curtis Vineyard which was planted in 1982 and is one of the few sources of Chenin Blanc in the Santa Ynez Valley. The self-rooted vines of this lot are grown at 1,100 ft. elevation. The aroma is quince with flavors of pear and almond. The barrel fermented portion of this texture adds texture and aromatic complexity.


Tasting Notes: The 2018 Chenin Blanc is pale straw with emerald undertones and is carried by a beautiful bouquet of magnolia, early peach, and Bosc pear. This surprisingly dry wine tastes of lemon, honey, and green apple. Light-bodied with bright acidity, pair with roasted chicken, seared pork loin, or strong creamy cheeses.
