This 2015 vintage is from a low vigor block in the warmer Happy Canyon appellation on the Los Padres side of Hwy 154. Happy Canyon, located in the north-east Santa Ynez Valley, is one of seven Santa Barbara County AVAs.
It is described as a bucolic canyon of hillside vineyards. Differentiated from the rest of Santa Barbara County, it has decidedly hotter temperatures and a high-magnesium mineral terroir.
These unique factors and the micro-climate make this area suitable for producing Bordeaux varietals with concentrated flavors and a ripe fruit quality that has been difficult to achieve in the cooler areas of Santa Barbara County.
Winemaker's comments: 2015 yileded an extremely small crop. My two 5-ton contracts yeilded 3.58 tons instead of 10. Small clusters with tiny berries produced a dense concentrated wine.
Flavors developed early in the ripening cycle and we picked all our Cabernet in September, which is unusual as we normally pick in October and November.
