In Santa Barbara County, if Sta. Rita Hills is Burgundy, then Happy Canyon is Bordeaux. And Happy Canyon has quickly made a name for itself by producing big, bold, concentrated red wines, and fruit driven white wines. The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon uses grapes from the McGinley Vineyard on the Eastern edge of the Santa Ynez Valley. The McGinley Vineyard produces berries with ripe, concentrated flavors; this is due to the warm weather, and nutrient low top-soil that encourages horizontal root growth.
Happy Canyon is located in the north-east Santa Ynez Valley and is one of six Santa Barbara County AVAs. It is described as a bucolic canyon of hillside vineyards. Differentiated from the rest of Santa Barbara County, it has decidedly hotter temperatures and a high-magnesium mineral terroir.
These unique factors and the micro-climate make this area suitable for producing Bordeaux varietals with concentrated flavors and a ripe fruit quality that has been difficult to achieve in the cooler areas of Santa Barbara County.
Winemaker Comments: The two Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards (Star Lane & McGinley) in this vintage are located about a mile and a half apart at the top of Happy Canyon. This is the warmest appellation in Santa Barbara County and very well-suited for Bordeaux varieties. Star Lane Vineyard is denser and structural while McGinley Vineyard is more fragrant and supple - resulting in a complete version of Happy Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon.
Tasting Notes: The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark ruby color with smashed blackberry and peppercorn aromas. The aromas carry over onto the tongue with flavors of blackberry, currant and red bell pepper. Full-bodied, serve with grilled ribeye, grilled eggplant, or rich lasagna.
