Andy Joughin, our Vineyard Manager for many years, was looking for interesting grapes to plant in his small home vineyard in the Los Olivos area of the Santa Ynez Valley. Varieties that would have a niche value and not compete with the more common ones. Andy consulted winemaker Bruce McGuire who recommended several Italian red varietals.
One of these was Primitivo, the primary grape of the Puglia region of Italy. Los Olivos, in the central area of the Santa Ynez Valley, has a climate similar to that of Puglia. The small lots that these grapes produce are part of our incentive to offer special bottlings of limited distibution and of interesting and unusual wines.
DNA analysis has shown that Primitivo and California's Zinfandel are genenetically similar.
Winemaker Comments: Primitivo is genetically Zinfandel. It arrived in Italy and the U.S. about 150 years ago from Croatia where it is known as Tribidrag. They all have jammy, bramble berry fruit with spicy black pepper. 2016 was in the middle of the California drought resulting in small vines and small clusters producing very concentrated fruit.
Tasting Notes: The 2016 Primitivo is a rich opaque purple with aromas of blackberry jam, ripe plum, and turned mulch. Well-developed flavors of stewed black fruit, balsamic, and bitter dark chocolate round out the palate. Full-bodied with bold tannins, this chewy red pairs well with Italian meat sauces, sausage (with fennel), and roasted lamb.
