Petit Verdot is a small dark berry that when ripened properly, will produce an intensely full bodied red with bold spice notes and high tannin.

Though its origins are not clear, most sources agree that the varietal predates Cabernet Sauvignon, making it a staple in most Bordeaux Blends.

The varietal has been used much less in France over the last few decades as it ripens slowly and cannot always fully mature in Bordeaux’s cool fall season.

Petit Verdot has become quite attractive to New World growers that can allow for longer hang time.

Winemaker Comments: The 2015 Petit Verdot had a light crop with small clusters and small berries. Normally dark and dense, this Petit Verdot fruit is still amplified, but supple. Enjoyable now, especially with decanting, but it has a long life ahead of it.

Tasting Notes: The 2015 Petit Verdot is dark garnet in color with medium purple undertones. A pleasant bouquet of ripe plum, lilac, and potting soil greet the nose. Fully ripe flavors of raspberry, blueberry, and hazelnut flow smoothly across the tongue. High in tannins, this full-bodied red pairs well with smoked meats, sausages, and spicy Italian dishes.
