Rising in the middle of the western Santa Ynez Valley, the Sta. Rita Hills are the distinguishing feature of our AVA, home of Lafond Vineyard and a wonderful area to grow Riesling.
The long, very cool growing season of this area is exemplified by February bud break and September harvest, a long period for vine physiology that creates wines of intense concentration and balanced acidity.
Lafond Vineyard is home to about 15 acres of Riesling. This Late Harvest Sta. Rita Hills designated bottling comes from an old block which gives the wine great depth and concentration.
Winemaker's Comments: Picked December 10th, a full two months after our other riesling blocks. Clone 49 was selected to hang because of its larger canopy to allow continued ripening. After rain, botrytus developed which concentrated the flavor, sugar, and acidity.
The grapes were foot stomped (wearing rubber boots) to break up the botrytis raisins and release flavors from the skins. After soaking for two days, the juice was pressed from the stems and skins for fermentation. Residual sugar and low alcohol were achieved by stopping the fermentation by chilling.
Tasting Notes: The 2013 Late Harvest Riesling is a warm amber color. Rich aromas of sweet raisin, baked apple pie, and pear liqueur fill the glass. Round flavors of ripe peach, honeycomb, and golden raisin coat the tongue. The late harvest riesling pairs great with lemon curd desserts, pineapple upside down cake, or aged blue cheese.
